Most of us, even the most healthy, have been sick once-in-awhile, but have you, or anyone close to you, ever had an illness which was so serious that it kept you or them off of work for months at a time?
Even though we all would like to think otherwise, catastrophic illnesses can affect anyone, at any time. Even though every certificated employee in CUSD earns 10 sick days a year, and some employees have accrued many days over that, the sick days an employee earns may not be enough to cover him or her in the case of a long-term illness. Therefore a “Sick Leave Bank” was established in CUSD in order to help out certificated employees in this unfortunate situation
When an employee runs out of all accrued sick pay, he/she pays the substitute rate out of his/her salary for a period no longer than 5 months. (Refer to Article 10.2.10.1 pages 31-33 in CUEA/CUSD contract.) In case of a catastrophic illness such as cancer, or effects from a severe automobile accident or surgery, an employee may be out of work beyond that five month period. In that case the employee, if he/she had previously donated at least five days to the “Sick Leave Bank” may withdraw up to 90 days of sick leave. (Determination of the number sick days will be approved by the Sick Leave Bank Committee which is made up of CUSD and CUEA members.)
While we all would like to think that such a disaster would not happen to us, experiences of our colleagues tell us otherwise. Employees who have more than the 10 sick days earned in the current school year may donate to the “Sick Leave Bank.” No employee may donate to the bank with the 10 sick days earned for this year; donation of sick days must be from prior years’ accumulation. A sick leave donation is considered to be a donation for general use, therefore, donations cannot be made for a specific unit member.
CUEA urges all members to seriously consider a five day donation. Do yourself a favor and ask your office manager for the “Sick Leave Bank Deposit Form.” Complete it and send the form to Personnel Services at the District Office.
For further information on Catastrophic Leave refer to Article 10.17 pages 43-45 in your contract.
